The Florida Department of Transportation opened the new I-95 interchange at Oslo Road in Indian River County on October 5, a year ahead of schedule, giving southern Indian River County direct interstate access from that corridor for the first time. It is the county’s first new interchange in more than 50 years. Oslo Road was widened from two to four lanes, with a new bridge over I-95, a new traffic signal at 66th Avenue, sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
FDOT describes Oslo Road as a designated truck route serving southern Indian River County and says the interchange improves access to the area’s commercial and industrial node at Oslo Road and I-95. It should also ease congestion at the existing interchanges at Indrio Road and State Road 60, and the state expects commute times along Oslo Road to be cut roughly in half.
For a distribution, contractor or service business, that can change the math on a southern Indian River site. Locations that used to require a long run up or down local roads to reach the interstate may now be a few minutes away, which affects delivery windows, fuel costs and how large an area a single location can serve.
Indian River County is separately drafting a West Oslo Overlay District for the land between 58th and 90th Avenues SW and 5th and 13th Streets SW, a set of area-specific rules for development and redevelopment covering site design, streets, landscaping and incentives. The published schedule lists a public workshop on November 5 at 5 p.m. at the IG Center, a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting seeking a recommendation on November 12 at 6 p.m., and a County Commission adoption hearing on December 1 at 9 a.m. Those are proposed dates, not approvals, and the draft regulations are still open for comment.
If you are considering a southern Indian River site, rerun your truck routes and delivery times with the new interchange, but confirm zoning, utilities and any outdoor storage permission separately, since better access does not change what a property is allowed to do. If you own land near Oslo Road, review the draft overlay and take part in the November meetings before the rules are set. If you are comparing Treasure Coast locations, interstate access just improved for one more corridor.
